Volume 1 Verdict: Keyaki Shopping District's Sakura Bathhouse
At first glance, Keyaki Shopping District’s Sakura Bathhouse is a cute BL that wastes no time at all. You can already get a strong sense of the main characters within the first few pages, and by the end of chapter one, it’s hard not to be completely invested.
It follows Tatsumi and his kouhai, Shunpei, whose family runs a bathhouse, and their dynamic quickly becomes the heart of the story.
First Impressions
This is one of those series where you can tell immediately what the vibe is, and it delivers on it right away. It builds quickly without feeling rushed, and it’s easy to get attached to the characters early on; Shunpei is especially endearing. He really does come across like an adorable puppy of a boy, trying his best to win over Tatsumi. The blunt, one-sided pining is cute, but it also feels genuine, and it gives the story a strong emotional anchor from the start.
The pacing stood out to me a lot. It gains momentum quickly, but never feels overwhelming, and I found myself enjoying every page without wanting to skip ahead. Even the side characters, who start off feeling more minor, begin to gain relevance as the story goes on.
And just when it feels like everything is lining up perfectly—like you’re “winning” as a reader—it shifts. Not in a way that ruins the tone, but enough to keep things interesting and give the story more to build on moving forward.
